JAPAN, November 28, 2006 - I-O DATA DEVICE, INC. (hereinafter referred to as “I-O DATA”) has developed an industry-first*1 the HDMC-U series of USB 2.0/1.1-capable compact external hard disk drives featuring water resistance to depths of 1m. The 2 models in this series will be sequentially ready for shipping in mid-December. Combined target sales for both models are projected at 20,000 units a year.
1. Outstanding cost-performance
These days, with the decreasing price of semiconductors, gigabyte-class models
are the mainstream for SD cards and USB memory. However, hard disk drives
still enjoy the advantage in terms of absolute cost-performance; in comparison
to our own USB memory device (the EPSL-2G: 2-gigabyte model), the 8-gigabyte
model hard disk drive achieves a cost reduction over 50%. Use of a 1-inch
hard disk designed for embedded mobile phone applications enables a massive
reduction in size. The unit’s integrated design also features a USB cable
combined with a built-in shock eliminator for impact resistance, offering
ease of mounting/dismounting almost identical to a USB memory device.
Just like the name of the “Pocketable HDD”, it is a casual, compact storage solution that fits in the hand.

2. Phenomenal toughness
Possessing both water resistance capabilities to a depth of 1 meter*2 (by the IPX7 (previously JIS waterproof level) standard) and impact resistance capabilities for a drop-test from 122cm (by US Department of Defense standard MIL-STD-810F), this product casts aside the delicate image associated with hard disk drives. The know-how that I-O DATA has cultivated in developing impact-resistant hard-disks helps achieve this combination of supreme mobility with secure protection of vital data in a worst-case scenario.
3. Further expansion of applications
*Simultaneous communication of data between home and office via HDMC-U can be simply performed using the data-sync application “Sync with” *No need to bring a connecting cable when traveling, as a USB cable is built-in. *The special security application HDMC Lock gives password-lock functionality without the need to install additional programs*3, thus reducing the risk of external data leaks. |
